Personal Branding: Kim Kardashian's USP

No secret what my favourite reality television show is – and it has been for the past four years. I get scoffed at when I declare that I look forward to my weekly episodes of Keeping Up with the Kardashians while my husband rolls his eyes and finds refuge in the bedroom every time the episode is on. Scoff at the Kardashians or my choice of entertainment, but there is no running away form the fact that Kim K is a change-maker and that Forbes featured her on the cover of the July 2016 issue.

Even Forbes couldn’t help but refer to the famous sex-tape of almost a decade ago, something critics of Kim K fall back on when they cannot explain her success. She was no actress, singer or designer when the reality show started 12 seasons ago, but yet her popularity stumped many with her over 78.8 million followers on Instagram and raking in a cool $51 million this year to make it to No. 42 of Forbes’ Celebrity List and not forgetting the hit mobile game, Kim Kardashian:Hollywood, downloaded 45 million times since it’s launch in 2014 with a revenue of $160 million.

Still scoffing at Kim K?

Kim K makes no secret that she’s not an intellectual and she does not pretend she’s one. Conversations are centred around outfits, make-up, weight-loss, diets, workouts, children, guests appearances at events, holidays and REPEAT. What then is her Unique Selling Proposition (USP) that has so many women glued to the show, following her on social media and downloading the app for her Kimoji or the mobile game?

Kim K is selling a dream – a dream life that happens in movies and romance novels but never in reality. Tapping on human curiosity of what life of the rich and famous must be like, she used the stardom from reality TV to leverage on her other business, all the while, keeping true to living the dream life – private planes to fly her around, dining at top restaurants, remodeling the $11 million mansion, amongst the many other things.

Kim K is a game changer, a trendsetter. Not one to curl off to the corner of the earth because of a leaked sex-tape, she is constantly looking for opportunities and reinventing herself. Looking at her now, who would have imagined her little “naughty” secret? Quoting Kim K from the Forbes magazine article, “when people look at me in a way like, ‘Why is she stepping into the tech world? That’s not her territory! Stick to reality TV!’ I was like, ‘No'”. And in reinventing herself, she is shrewd and seeks to study what she doesn’t know, spending time in San Francisco to better understand what the tech world was all about as she so aptly states in her interview, “I realized this is really going to be the next cycle of my career and this is what I want to focus on.”

Kudos to you Kim K. You definitely are a game changer.

For a FREE 30-minute consult to work on your Personal Branding and identify your USP, send us an email at ./contact/
